THUMP interviews Susanne Regina Meures

THUMP, the electronic music and culture channel from VICE, interviews Susanne Regina Meures, Raving Iran's director, who followed two DJs at the centre of Tehran's underground techno scene.

THUMP: What were your encounters with the police like?

Susanne Regine Meures: We were constantly being stopped by the police. But I had taken precautions. After each shoot and every recording, I replaced the memory card with the footage with a memory card full of tourist videos. Then I would hide the card with the footage in my bra. At the airport, there were also thorough luggage checks each time. Aside from tons of Swiss chocolate on the flight to Iran and Iranian nougat on the return flight I had nothing to declare.

Anoosh and Arash are at the center of Tehran’s underground techno scene. Tired of hiding from the police and their stagnating career, they organize one last manic techno rave under dangerous circumstances in the desert. Back in Tehran they try their luck selling their illegally printed album without permission. When Anoosh is arrested, there seems to be no hope left. But then they receive a phone call from the biggest techno festival in the world.
